What PEPE actually is
Pepe (ticker PEPE) is a meme token on Ethereum. Someone deployed its contract on 14 April 2023, seeded a Uniswap pool with 93.1% of the supply and kept 6.9% in a multisig wallet for exchange listings. Then they renounced ownership, which means nobody can mint more tokens, add a transaction tax or change the rules. The code is deliberately plain — the hype is entirely human.
That simplicity is the point. PEPE has no app, no staking programme and no product roadmap; its own website openly says the coin has no intrinsic value and is “for entertainment purposes only”. What it does have is one of the internet’s most recognisable frogs, deep liquidity on almost every big exchange and a community that turned a joke into a multi-billion-dollar asset. In December 2024 the market valued all those tokens at roughly $11.8 billion. By October 2026 that figure had shrunk by more than 85%, which tells you everything about how fast meme money moves.
If you are new, start with what is Pepe coin for the full story, then read PEPE tokenomics to understand why a 420.69 trillion supply makes each token cost a fraction of a cent. The frog the token is named after belongs to artist Matt Furie, who drew Pepe for his comic Boy’s Club in 2005 — he has nothing to do with the coin.

How to buy PEPE in four steps
Buying PEPE is the same as buying any large altcoin: you need an account somewhere that lists it, a way to pay, and a plan for where the tokens will live afterwards. The details that trip people up are local — which platforms are legal in your country, whether you can pay in your own currency, and how gains are taxed. That is why we wrote a separate step-by-step guide to buying Pepe coin and twelve country pages.
Pick a place that serves your country
A licensed exchange or app with a PEPE pair you can fund — PEPE/USD, PEPE/EUR, PEPE/TRY, PEPE/IDR or PEPE/USDT. Our exchange comparison and country guides list what works where.
Verify your identity
Regulated platforms ask for an ID document and a selfie. It usually takes minutes, sometimes a day or two. Use your real details: withdrawals must match your name.
Add money and buy
Fund with a bank transfer, card, Apple Pay or a local rail like Pix, QRIS or havale/EFT, then buy PEPE. A limit order lets you set the price; check the spread on thin local pairs.
Decide where to keep it
Leave a small amount on the exchange for trading, or send it to your own Ethereum wallet. Copy the contract from our wallet guide and send a test amount first.
Two habits save most beginners from expensive mistakes. First, never buy a “PEPE” token from a link in a DM, a Telegram group or a search ad; on a decentralised exchange, paste the contract address yourself. Second, think about fees before you click buy. Card purchases are fast but often cost several percent, while a bank transfer and a limit order on a liquid pair can bring the total under half a percent. Our PEPE calculator shows what fees do to a small trade.

Some contrasts are striking. In Turkey, PEPE trades directly against the lira on BtcTurk, Paribu, Binance TR and OKX TR, and the lira was one of PEPE’s biggest fiat markets when we checked. Indonesians buy PEPE/IDR on OJK-supervised apps like Indodax and Pintu with QRIS or e-wallets. Germans weigh the one-year holding rule under §23 EStG, while Indian buyers face a flat 30% tax plus 1% TDS. Our country hub compares all twelve markets side by side.

There is no single best exchange for PEPE. Bitvavo and Bitpanda hold MiCA licences and suit euro buyers; Coinbase and Robinhood are the mainstream US routes; BtcTurk and Paribu give Turkish users lira pairs but are only on the regulator’s provisional list, not fully licensed. PEPE vs DOGE, SHIB and the rest
Dogecoin is the grandparent of meme coins: its own proof-of-work chain, launched in 2013, with an unlimited supply. Shiba Inu brought the meme to Ethereum in 2020 and built a whole ecosystem around it. PEPE is the purest of the three — no chain, no ecosystem, no burn mechanism, just a token and a frog. That makes it simpler to understand and arguably more honest, but it also means the price rests entirely on attention.
The live bars show where each coin stands today by market value. For supply, launch dates, all-time highs and ETF status side by side, read PEPE vs Dogecoin vs Shiba Inu. And if you have seen a coin called Pepecoin with the ticker PEP, that is a different project entirely — our PEPE vs Pepecoin guide untangles the three frogs that share the name.
The risks nobody puts on a meme
PEPE’s contract is about as clean as meme-coin code gets, so the biggest dangers are elsewhere. Price is the obvious one: the token lost more than 85% between its December 2024 peak and October 2026, and drops of 20% in a day are normal. Concentration is another. On 13 October 2026, the top 100 wallets held about 77% of the supply, mostly exchange hot and cold wallets, so a few large players can move the market.
Then there are the traps around the coin. Copycats such as “Pepe 2.0” or presale tokens with Pepe in the name have nothing to do with PEPE, and most trade far below their launch hype — our guide to Pepe copycats covers the common ones. In December 2025 security firm Blockaid flagged a hijacked PEPE website serving wallet-draining code, a reminder never to connect your wallet to a site just because it looks right.
- Check the contract address character by character before you buy on a DEX.
- Use a regulated exchange in your country and turn on two-factor authentication.
- Size the position so a 90% drop would not change your life.
- Ignore anyone promising a price target or asking for your seed phrase.
Our full PEPE safety check walks through the contract, the 2023 multisig incident, exchange risk and the regulatory picture — including the SEC staff statement of February 2025 that typical meme coins are not securities, which is non-binding and does not name PEPE.

From zero to $11.8 billion and back
PEPE’s first weeks were one of the wildest runs of the 2023 meme season. OKX listed it on 1 May and Binance followed on 5 May, and the token went from fractions of a fraction of a cent to a market value in the billions. The August 2023 multisig episode cooled things down, then the 2024 bull market — and the long-awaited Coinbase and Robinhood listings in November — pushed PEPE to its record on 9 December 2024.
The latest chapter is institutional: in April 2026 Canary Capital filed with the SEC for a spot PEPE ETF and amended the filing on 2 October. A filing is not an approval, and we will update our PEPE news timeline when anything changes. For the full chart and every milestone, see PEPE price history.
The frog is born
PEPE’s contract is deployed on Ethereum (block 17,046,105). Its lowest recorded price, $0.000000055, comes three days later.
Binance lists PEPE
Binance adds PEPE to its Innovation Zone after OKX listed it on 1 May; the token’s first big run follows.
The multisig scare
16 trillion tokens leave the team multisig and hit exchanges. The team blames three former members; trust takes a hit.
All-time high
After Coinbase and Robinhood listings on 13 November 2024, PEPE peaks at $0.00002803 — about $11.8 billion in market value.
An ETF filing
Canary Capital files an S-1 for a spot PEPE ETF with the SEC, amended on 2 October 2026. It is not approved or trading yet.

Questions people ask
What is Pepe coin (PEPE)?+
PEPE is an ERC-20 meme token on Ethereum, deployed on 14 April 2023 and named after the Pepe the Frog meme. It has a fixed supply of about 420.69 trillion tokens, no transaction tax and a renounced contract, and its own website says it has no intrinsic value or roadmap. People trade it for the culture and the volatility, not for any utility.
Is pepecoin.finance the official PEPE website?+
No. pepecoin.finance is an independent review and guide site. It is not run by the anonymous PEPE team, by Matt Furie (the artist behind Pepe the Frog) or by any exchange. The token’s own site is pepe.vip, and the contract can be checked on Etherscan.
Where can I buy PEPE?+
PEPE trades on most large exchanges, including Binance (since 5 May 2023), OKX, Kraken, Bitvavo, Coinbase and Robinhood (both since 13 November 2024), plus local platforms such as BtcTurk and Paribu in Turkey and Indodax and Pintu in Indonesia. Pick one that is legal where you live and offers a pair you can fund easily.
Can PEPE reach 1 cent?+
At $0.01 per token, PEPE’s supply of roughly 420.69 trillion would be worth about $4.2 trillion — more than most of the crypto market combined in October 2026. It is not mathematically impossible, but it would need a market cap thousands of times larger than today’s, so treat 1-cent promises with deep scepticism.
Is PEPE the same as Pepecoin (PEP)?+
No. PEPE is the Ethereum meme token from 2023. Pepecoin (PEP) is a separate proof-of-work blockchain launched in January 2024, merge-mined with Litecoin and Dogecoin. There is also an older PepeCoin (PEPECOIN) from 2016. They have different tickers, wallets and markets, so always check the ticker and contract before buying.
Is PEPE a safe investment?+
The contract itself is simple and renounced, but the investment is very risky: PEPE fell more than 85% from its December 2024 all-time high by October 2026, a handful of wallets (mostly exchanges) hold most of the supply, and fake “PEPE” tokens are common. Only use money you can afford to lose.
