Is Pepe coin a good investment? The short answer

Whether Pepe coin is a good investment depends on what you mean by “investment”. PEPE has no revenue, no product and no team that owes holders anything. Its own website says it is “a meme coin with no intrinsic value or expectation of financial return”, which is refreshingly honest and worth taking literally. What PEPE does have is a huge, liquid market, listings on almost every major exchange and a contract that cannot be changed by anyone.

So the fair framing is this: PEPE is a high-risk speculative asset with low technical risk and high market risk. The code is unlikely to rob you. The price, the hype cycle and the scammers around it very well might. The rest of this page separates those two kinds of risk so you can judge them on their own merits, and the quiz on the right checks whether your own setup is the weak spot.

Contract risk: what the code can and cannot do

Most meme-coin disasters start with the contract: a hidden tax that jumps to 99%, an owner who can mint new tokens, or liquidity that the deployer pulls out overnight. PEPE avoids all three. We checked the verified source code on Etherscan and read the contract directly on 13 October 2026. The owner() function returns the zero address, which means ownership is renounced. The code has no fee or tax functions, so a swap costs you the exchange or DEX fee and gas, nothing more.

Liquidity is the other big one. Of the main Uniswap V2 PEPE/WETH pool’s LP tokens, about 99.4% sit inside the PEPE contract itself. The contract has no function to move them and no owner to call one, so that liquidity is effectively locked forever. The website says the LP was “burnt”; technically it was locked rather than sent to a dead address, but the effect for holders is the same.

There is one honest caveat. The contract does include blacklist() and setRule() functions, which once let the owner block addresses or cap wallet sizes. With the owner renounced, nobody can call them anymore. They are inert, but they are there, and you will see them flagged by token scanners. Our PEPE tokenomics breakdown goes deeper into supply, the 93.1/6.9 launch split and burns.

The multisig incident and other insider history

A clean contract does not mean a clean history. When Binance listed PEPE on 5 May 2023, its notice warned of signs that insiders bought about 7% of the supply within minutes of creation. Three months later came the episode that still shapes how people see the project.

On 24 August 2023, about 16 trillion PEPE left the team multisig, the wallet that held the 6.9% reserved for exchange listings, and went to Binance, OKX, Bybit and other exchanges. The signing threshold of the multisig was reportedly lowered at the same time, though outlets disagree on the exact numbers. Two days later, the remaining team said three “former founding team members” had made the transfers and removed themselves. That is the team’s own account; who actually moved the tokens has not been independently confirmed. The price fell about 16% within a day, according to the risk section of the Canary PEPE ETF filing.

In October 2023 the remaining founder burned about 6.9 trillion PEPE from what was left, and roughly 3.79 trillion was kept for partnerships and marketing. Where those tokens sit today is unverified. The full sequence is on our PEPE price history page.

When the multisig movesThe August 2023 transfers are a reminder that renouncing a contract does not stop people holding tokens from selling them.

Whale concentration: who holds the supply

On 13 October 2026 the top 100 PEPE addresses held 76.73% of the supply, according to Etherscan’s holder chart. That sounds alarming until you look at the labels. Most of the biggest wallets are exchange custody wallets: four labelled Binance wallets alone hold about 17.9%, with OKX, Bybit, Bithumb, BtcTurk, Crypto.com, Robinhood, Kraken and Gate further down the list. Those tokens belong to millions of exchange customers, not to one whale.

Still, several large wallets are unlabelled, including one holding about 6.17% of supply. Their owners are unknown, and a big holder deciding to sell can move the price quickly. The dead address holds another 1.64% from the 2023 burn, and those tokens will never move.

Fake tokens and wallet drainers

For most people, the biggest practical danger is buying the wrong token. Hundreds of tokens use the PEPE name or ticker, on Ethereum and on other chains. There is no official PEPE on Solana at all, for example, so any “PEPE on Solana” is something else. Bridged versions do exist on BNB Chain, Arbitrum and Avalanche, but together they are a tiny fraction of supply. The real token is 0x6982508145454Ce325dDbE47a25d4ec3d2311933 on Ethereum. Our guide to Pepe clones and copycats walks through the best-known look-alikes, and the PEPE wallet guide shows how to add the right contract.

Even the official website has been a risk. On 4 December 2025, the security firm Blockaid detected Inferno Drainer code on the official Pepe site’s front-end, redirecting visitors to malicious pages, and Binance and KuCoin warned users, as Cointelegraph reported. The token itself was not affected, but anyone who connected a wallet and signed the wrong approval could lose funds.

Exchange risk and regulatory status

Most people hold PEPE on an exchange, which swaps contract risk for counterparty risk. Exchanges get hacked. BtcTurk, one of Turkey’s largest PEPE venues, lost about $55 million from hot wallets in June 2024 and about $48 million in August 2025, according to Halborn. Indonesia’s Indodax was drained of an estimated $20–22 million in September 2024. Coinbase had a customer-data breach in May 2025, though no funds or keys were taken. None of this was PEPE’s fault, but it affects PEPE holders. Our BtcTurk review and Indodax review cover how each handled it, and the PEPE exchange comparison lists what to check before you sign up.

On regulation, the key document is the US SEC staff statement on meme coins from 27 February 2025. It says that meme coins as described there are generally not securities. It is non-binding staff guidance, it does not name PEPE, and fraud around meme coins can still be prosecuted under other laws. Rules elsewhere vary by country. In October 2026, Canary Capital’s spot PEPE ETF was still only a filing with an amendment dated 2 October 2026, not an approved product. Country-specific rules are on our PEPE by country hub.

Is Pepe coin dead, a scam or legit?

Is it dead? No. On 13 October 2026, CoinGecko showed about $287 million in 24-hour trading volume and a market cap of roughly $1.7 billion, ranking PEPE #61 overall. Dead coins don’t trade like that. But “alive” is not the same as “healthy”: the price was down about 85.5% from the 9 December 2024 all-time high, and PEPE was among the worst-performing large meme coins of 2025.

Is it a scam? The token is not structured as one. There was no presale to dump on buyers, there is no tax and the liquidity is locked. The insider moves of 2023 are a legitimate concern, and the scams around PEPE (fake tokens, drainers, “recovery” services) are very real. Calling PEPE legit means the token works as described, not that it will make money.

Can it go to zero? In theory, yes. Any token whose value is pure attention can fade. In practice, a coin listed on Binance, Coinbase, Robinhood and Upbit with hundreds of thousands of on-chain holders is unlikely to vanish overnight; what is plausible is a long, slow bleed. If you are wondering whether PEPE could ever hit a cent instead, the maths on whether PEPE can reach 1 cent is sobering.

👍 What we like

  • Owner renounced and no transfer tax
  • About 99.4% of launch liquidity locked in the contract
  • Deep liquidity on major global exchanges
  • Large holder base: 594,436 addresses on 13 Oct 2026

👀 What to watch

  • No intrinsic value, by the project’s own words
  • Insider transfers in August 2023
  • Large unlabelled wallets can move the price
  • Heavy fake-token and phishing activity

What about halal or haram?

This is a real question for many readers, especially in Indonesia, Turkey and Pakistan. We are not qualified to issue a religious ruling, and we did not find a ruling that addresses PEPE specifically. Scholars and Islamic bodies have reached different conclusions about crypto trading in general, and a token that openly describes itself as having no intrinsic value raises its own questions about speculation. The respectful answer is to ask a scholar you trust, with the facts on this page in hand.

How to size a PEPE position

If you decide PEPE is worth buying, the most useful safety tool is a number: how much. A sensible starting point is an amount you would be fine losing completely, because meme coins have a habit of testing that. Looking at drawdowns helps: after the Binance listing peak in May 2023, PEPE dropped to a monthly low near $0.0000006 by September 2023, and from the December 2024 peak it fell to about $0.0000022 by mid-2026.

  • Cap meme coins at a small slice of your total crypto, and crypto at a small slice of your savings.
  • Buy in two or three steps instead of all at once after a big green day.
  • Decide in advance what you will do after a 50% drop and after a 2x.
  • Use spot only. Leverage on a token this volatile ends badly more often than not.
  • Keep a record of every buy and sell for tax; rules differ by country.

Use the PEPE profit calculator to see what your amount would look like at different prices, and read our PEPE price scenarios to understand why nobody, us included, can tell you where it goes next. When you are ready, the step-by-step guide to buying PEPE keeps the process simple.

Our take

PEPE is about as safe as a meme coin gets at the contract level, and that is exactly why the remaining risks deserve your attention: price swings, insider history, fakes and the exchange you use. Treat it as a lottery ticket with good liquidity, not as an investment plan.

Questions people ask

Is Pepe coin a good investment?+

PEPE is a meme token with no cash flows, no product and, in its own website’s words, no intrinsic value. Its price moves on attention and liquidity. It can suit a small, speculative slice of a portfolio that you can afford to lose entirely, but it is not a substitute for savings or long-term investments.

Is Pepe coin a scam?+

The token contract itself is not a rug-pull design: ownership is renounced, there is no buy or sell tax and about 99.4% of the original Uniswap liquidity is locked in the contract. The project did have insider issues in 2023, and there are many fake PEPE tokens and phishing sites, which is where most scams actually happen.

Is Pepe coin dead?+

No. On 13 October 2026 CoinGecko still showed PEPE with about $287 million in 24-hour volume and a market cap near $1.7 billion, and it is listed on Binance, Coinbase, Robinhood and Upbit. The price was about 85% below its December 2024 peak, though, so it is far from its best days.

Can PEPE go to zero?+

Any meme coin can lose almost all of its value if attention and liquidity dry up. PEPE is large and widely listed, which makes a sudden collapse less likely than for a tiny token, but nothing guarantees a price floor. Size your position as if a 90% fall is possible.

Is Pepe coin halal or haram?+

We do not issue religious rulings. Scholars and Islamic bodies hold different views on cryptocurrency trading in general, and we found no ruling specific to PEPE. If this matters to you, ask a qualified scholar you trust and explain that PEPE is a speculative meme token without underlying business activity.

Is PEPE the same as Pepecoin?+

No. PEPE is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Pepecoin (PEP) is a separate proof-of-work blockchain, and PepeCoin (PEPECOIN) is a 2016 project now tied to BasedAI. Asking whether Pepecoin is legit is a separate question, covered on our PEPE vs Pepecoin page.
